6 Steps to help resolve any challenge you face!

Six simple steps to help resolve any challenge you face…

We all experience challenges as we move through life. Sometimes it can seem that life is against us.

In this article, we explore the truth about the challenges we face, their meaning and discover 6 simple steps we can take to quickly decide what to do and to turn the challenge into an opportunity.

Wow! Sometimes doesn’t it feel like it’s one thing after another! Certainly, in my life there have been many times where I would be faced with a huge challenge out of the blue – I would look at it as a major problem. I would become stressed over it – I would sometimes feel like I was slowing down as the problem felt heavy. I would try to ignore it however the
longer I ignored it the heavier it felt! Then once I figured a way to try and resolve the problem, what happened? Another one showed up! Sometime two at the same time! I would think why me?!

Does this sound familiar? Well, stick with me here – try the following steps to breakthrough your challenge and move forward – with a smile on your face!

Step 1 – Problem or challenge?

Just naming the situation as a problem can feel dis-empowering. Acknowledge that this is a challenge and not a problem. In sport, we don’t have problems – we have challenges. A challenge can be fun! Acknowledge that this challenge is here for a reason. This is an opportunity for you to grow. Ask yourself what does this challenge really mean? How will I feel once I resolve this challenge?

Step 2 – A different perspective

Who do you know who could easily resolve this? This could be someone you know, somebody famous (an actor/actress) – or even a fictitious character – Indiana Jones, Lara Croft or even Austin Powers! Now, imagine you are now that person - How would you look at the problem? What would you say to yourself? How would you think?

Step 3 – A problem shared is a problem halved (sorry I mean challenge!)

If you feel comfortable, discuss the challenge with a close friend. It can be really helpful to get their opinion on the challenge and understand how they would address it. Alternatively, write the challenge down – this can help articulate it in more detail.

Step 4 – Let’s get moving!

Now, stay with me here – I know it will sound odd – but, please, please do the following:

1. Stand up. Shake your arms and legs for a few moments. Stand tall.

2. Close your eyes, open your arms out wide and spread your fingers and take three slow, deep breaths.

3. Now, open your eyes.

You should feel relaxed and more empowered – if not – then put some fast rock music on and dance like crazy for 5 minutes – and repeat this step - YES – I’m serious! It is critical to change your state before we move on.

Step 5 – Let’s start writing!

Write down answers to the following questions:

1. How will I grow by resolving this challenge?

2. How will I feel once I resolve this challenge?

3. What is great about this challenge?

Now, in this empowered state write down what options you can see to resolve the challenge. Just keep writing, don’t over think it, just write, whatever comes into your mind.

Looking at the options and taking your time circle the option you would like to move ahead with – it can help by going with your gut instinct.

Step 6 – Take action!

Well done! Now the easy part! Carry-out the action you would like to move ahead with. Repeating step 4 just before you carry out the action really helps to give you energy to move ahead with the action!

Don’t worry if you do not get the desired result the first time – just notice what is working and what is not working. Take a look at the other options you listed in step 5 to see if there is a more appropriate action. Repeat steps 1 – 6 as required.

So, as we wrap up here what have we learned?

Mindset is the key – facing a challenge with a dis-empowered mind-set will not help you. Changing your stage as described in step 4 will shift you into an empowered state with a strong mind-set, so that you are prepared to face the challenge.

Use a different perspective – look around you - you have friends and family that can support you and can help you brain-storm options for you to resolve the challenge.

Remember you are resourceful – you have resolved challenges in the past and you WILL resolve this one. You’ve already done incredible things in your life. This challenge is easy for you to fix!

So, stand tall and go get em! – realise you are special! Realise you are here for a reason. Life is really a game – full of challenges and opportunities. As you resolve each challenge you learn and grow and can use these experiences to help others.
